History: The Great War Veterans' Association was organized in 1919 and by 1921 had 27 members. The Association commissioned the cenotaph from Major Frank Norbury, a noted sculptor, that same year for approximately $1,200. Major Norbury also sculpted the cenotaph in Red Deer. On June 4, ,1923 the Holden Cenotaph was unveiled during a ceremonial parade and dedicated by Bishop Grey of Edmonton.(Heritage Collaborative, 2010)
